The Music of Robert Schumann
Updated: Jul 31
June 8th marks the birthday of German composer Robert Schumann. He was born in 1810. His father was an author and book dealer, so he grew up surrounded by books and fell in love with reading and writing. He also fell in love with music. As a kid he took piano, flute and cello and starting writing music.
Robert fell in love with his piano teacher's daughter - Clara. Clara's father was not happy with this because he was nine years older than her, she was only 16 at the time. It took many years and court battles with her father before they were finally able to get married.
The year before they got married is called "Schumann's year of Songs". He was so in love and just could not stop composing songs.
A hand injury stopped Schumann from being a concert pianist. His wife was a famous concert pianist and would often give first performances of his pieces.
When their daughter Marie turned seven his father gave her a small album of piano pieces. He later added to it and had it published as "Album for the Young" He liked to write shorter pieces of music.
In total they had 8 children together.
He died July 29, 1856.
Here is a short biography about him:
The Wild Horseman
(get up and gallop around, when the music changes gallop different direction - this happens when the horse is brown instead of white). The form of this song is AABA. This song is from "Album for the Young"
